VALUES AT WESTFIELD RfSE IN PIG RATES MARKET GENERALLY FIRM A slight increase in the price of lambs and a decrease in rates for ewes occurred at the fat stock sale at Westfield yesterday. Yardings generally were average, although the offering of sheep was fairly lull, and competition in most sections was steady. A good entry of ox beef and an average offering of cows and heifers realised late rates, although the top price for an extra heavy prime steer dropped 10s to £l4 los on last week's price. The best quotation for cows and neifers was £ll 10s, compared with £lO 10s. Extra heavy primp wefhers made to '2Bs 6d, against 29s fid, but other primo types were the same as last week. Prime ewes decreased in value from a best price last week of £1 Os 9d to 18s, and unfinished types dropped Is to 12s 6d. The best price for lambs increased from £1 8s to £1 9s fid, and unfinished classes improved by 6d. Calves again came forward in large numbers, but bidding was steady and rates were firm. The best price for runners was £7 17s fid, compared witli £8 2s. Vealers realised up to £5 fis. The top price for baconer pigs, slips and stores improved on last week's rates by Is in each case, and other classes wero firm in value. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday' As the result of smaller entries in the faf stock sections at the Addington market thera was a moderate recovery in prices, which have been showing an easing tendency for some sales. Fat lambs and export ewes, both of which have had a fractional advance in the export schedule, were dearer, and sold well. Prime fat wethers and ewes wero dearer and fat cattle improved by up to 203 a head. A total of IGOO fat lambs of mucji improved quality were penned, and the best sold to S 3 <d per lb. There was a small entry of store sheep and an Improved sale for forward lambs and wethers. Rates were slightly firmer for breeding ewes, which were mostly full and failing-mouthed. Sound-mouthed crossbreds made to ISs Gd. The offering of fat sheep was -1000. as against 5500 last week, light station wethers from Marlborough and the south being included. The latter sold draggingly, but prime wethers and ewes were belter by 2s to 2s Gd a head. Good wethers sold from 2Gs to 20s; tops, to' 335; light station wethers, 18s to 20s; exceptionally prime ewes, from 25s to 30s; prime, 20s to 235; prime medium-weight, los to lSs: ordinary, T'-'s to 14.5; plain, to lis. Fat cattle were penned to a total of 125, including southern truck lots. The best advanced by 20s a head, and others by 10s to 15s. Best beef made 36s to 38s per 1001b; medium to good. 33s to 355; rough, down to 265. A heavy entry of porkers met with a slacker sale, but baconers were firmer.
