FISHING AT TAUPO

CLOSE OF GOOD SEASON

TROUT IN FINE CONDITION FOOD PROBLEM SOLVED (0.C.) TAUPO, Wednesday The Tnupo fishing season, which closed Inst night, was the best lor ten years. Fishing generally throughout the whole season lias been good, although at times difficult. Although catches were small, anglers enjoyed good sjiort. Officers of the Internal Affairs Department have at fast solved the food question to improve the condition of the fish, by introducing smelt into Lake Tnupo. It is agreed among experienced anglers that the condition of the fish taken during this season far surpasses anything seen in Tnupo for years. Fish up to 161b. have been landed, and 81b., 911). and 101b. trout were quite common. With the fish in such good condition and feed so plentiful, it required skill and patience to secure limit catches

Waitahanui, always a favourite spot, was heavily fished all the season, and was at times much overcrowded, and few limit catches were taken. '1 he mouths ol the Taurnnga-Taupo and the Hatepe streams were well patronised, and generally gavo good results, hut numerous complaints were heard of the extensive use of boats at theso spots, which somewhat restricted the number oi' anglers possible. Results in the streams in the far western hay, such as Waihahn, Waihoro and Whangarui. were for the most part disappointing. The area between the Rangitara Point and the wharf, owing to its sheltered position from the westerly wind, was continually fished to such an extent that large catches wore not possible. Complaints have been heard about the extraordinary amount of night fishing being indulged in, and it is contended that regulations should be introduced to stop it. Ihe closing oi this season was the quietest for years, very few anglers being present.
