LOADING SHIPS
SHIFT WORK SYSTEM PAY UP TO 7/4* AN HOUR Shift-work was continued oil the Auckland waterfront over the weekend. Ordinary day work ceased at 10 o'clock 011 Saturday night and after an interval of an hour, during which more produce for loading was brought alongside, the new shift started and worked through until seven o'clock yesterdaydav morning. The same hours were worked yesterday and last night's late shift will work through until seven o'clock this morning. At eight o'clock the work will he resumed. For work between midnight and 7 a.m. the men will receive the usual Sunday rates of pay, about 7s 4d an hour, plus (3d an hour for those engaged on freezer work. The hour between 11 o'clock and midnight on Saturday was worked for double rates, or about os lid. Tally clerks and carpenters working alongside the waterside workers on the late shifts will receive the same rates of pay as the waterside workers.
The men were provided with transport to their homes after finishing work yesterdav morning. Ihe shift system will be carried out on overseas vessels on all occasions. The men on the night shift are being supplied with a hot meal at a time mutually agreed upon.
