WILDING SHIELD RETENTION BY WELLINGTON WAIKATO'S CHALLENGE FAILS [BY TKLEG HAITI —PRESS ASSOCIATION J WELLINGTON, Srtnday Wellington survived a challenge for the Wilding Shield by Waikato 011 the Miramar tennis courts ori Friday and yesterday after- j noon, winning nine out of 12 matches. Wai- : kato came to Wellington with one of its strongest teams for many years and the tennis over the two days was of a high standard. At the end /if Friday's play Wellington was leading by two matches, having won both doubles and two of the four singles. Yesterday Wellington won both doubles matches and three out of the four singles. Play on the first day was made difficult, by a strong wind and heavy, greasy courts. Conditions improved considerably yesterday, there being scarcely a breath of w.nd and the courts, although stilt fairly heavy, were far less slippery. Friday afternoon's attendance was small, but yesterday about 400 spectators watched the play. I The keenest singles contest yesterday was [between Edwards and ,T. Road!, which went •to three sets. In a hard battle, after losing the first set, Roach scored points with his | powerful backhand and he took the next '.two sets, in spite of a determined effort by 'Edwards, who was playing sound, steady tennis. • France and Roussell accounted for L. Roach am 11 Charters in the doubles, all four players giving an excellent display. In the filial set, however, the two Wellington players were particularly severe, both from back lino and at the net. Each team comprised eight men and eight women. The score in the A section was:—Mount Eden. 14; single courts, 0. In the B section the visitors were beaten by 12 matches to 8. Auckland Association. —The final of the ladies' hard-court champion of champions singles event, played at Windmill Road courts on Saturday, resulted in a win for Mrs. Ferguson (Unity), who beat Mrs. Lewis (Winstone Park), G—4, G —2. PLAY IN THE COUNTRY Franklin Association.—Tuakau won the Franklin Lawn Tennis Association's B grade competition this year, defeating West EndHill in the final, which was played at Tuaknu. The score was 11—3. The- annual schoolchildren's champion-of-champions tournament for the Franklin district was also held on Saturday. In the girls' final Lois Grogan j (Pokeno) beat Joie Barker (Wainku), 6 —2, ; 5—6. o—3. Roy Slevin (Pnkekohe) repeated his success of last year by winning the boys' 1 title.
