HOME GUARD UNITS
NORTH SHORE MANOEUVRES Several companies of the Home Guard in the North Shore districts were engaged in field manoeuvres during the week-end. The 12th (DevonportA battalion of the Home Guard was congratulated upon its fine work yesterday by Major A. W. Short, Officer Commanding the Auckland area. It carried out exercises at Brown's Hay where an attacking party, led by Captain A. G. Quartley, was deemed to have made a landing in an attempt to seize the Takapnna-Silverdale Road. In the afternoon the three companies were divided into two parties for tactical exercises. The Home Guard units from Takapnna, Northcote and Birkenhead combined under the leadership of Major K. J. Dellow to carry out exercises at Shoal Bay yesterday. During the day an attacking force, which had landed at Shoal Bay with the Waitemata power station on Northcote Road as the objective, was repulsed by a defending party stationed along the road. DONATION OF £l5O CALF POOL'S DECISION (0.C.) TF. AWAMUTU, Sunday An appeal for financial assistance from the Home Guard met with a ready response at the annual meeting of tho To Awamutu Hobby Calf Pool, when it: was unanimously decided to vote £ 1 ."50 from the pool's undistributed funds. The sum of £'l2s was allocated to the To Awamutu-Waipa battalion and ' the balance will he distributed among other groups which come within the pool's area.
