BETTING IN SHOP
FINE OF £SO IMPOSED Charged with keeping premises as a common gaming house on February 22, Alfred Melvin Wvatt, shop-keeper, aged 34 (Mr. Bryce Hart) appeared in the Police Court before Mr. .T. Moiling, S.M., yesterday. The charge was admitted. Detective-Sergeant Nalder said accused kept a confectionery shop in Dominion Road. On the day the police visited his shop he had taken £75 7s in double bets on the three meetings being held that day. In July last year he was fined £lO for a similar offence. Counsel said accused was not a member of the bookmakers' association and operated in only a small way. He had been trying to supplement his income. A fine of £SO was imposed, a month being allowed in which to pay.
