RECORD SURPLUS EXPECTED [BY TKLEGKAI'Il —JMIESS ASSOCIATION] CiittISTCHURCII, Thursday
The approximate returns of the Railway Department's operations for the four-weekiy period ended February I were referred to to-day by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. U. Seniple, who said there was a not revenue for the period amounting to approximately £191,963, ;ni increase of £9070 on the surplus recorded for the corresponding period of last year. The Minister said that this position was most gratifying. The excess of revenue over the full 4t weeks of the current year would be about £1,222,690, compared with £074,'29.'! in hand at the end of January, JO4O. Expenditure for the 44 weeks of the current year totalled £7,890,6:16, revenue being £9,119,053. "Kight more weeks have to be accounted for before the financial year ends," concluded Mr. Semplo. "The final eight weeks of last financial ye;U" produced a net revenue of £514,738, and during the remaining eight weeks of the present year we have to produce a net revenue of only £4.1.0,1.03 to equal the record surplus which the year 192526 yielded. It is quite evident from the present indications that the closing balance at March will eclipse the record by a considerable amount."
