NELSON'S BIRTHDAY

The 99th anniversary of the foundation of Nelson on February 1, 1842, was celebrated in Auckland at a largelyattended meeting of the Nclsonians' Association on Saturday evening, when the programme was carried out under the direction of Mr. A. B. Black, the president. Dr. T. Harold Pettit, being unavoidably absent. The patron of the association". Sir Ernest Davis, and Lady Davis were present. A large number of soldiers from the various camps also attended. Sir Ernest Davis paid a high tribute to the work of the earlv Nelson settlers of a century ago, and to the subsequent worthy record of themselves and their descendants. I\l r. W. D. Lusty gave a brief outline of events associated with the founding of Nelson. He made special reference to the arrival of the three "Expedition" ships in November, 1841. and the coming of the early immigrant vessels, the first to arrive being the Fifeshire on February 1, 1842.
