CANTEEN PROFITS

DISTRIBUTION OF £16,230 [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON, Saturday The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, who is chairman of the Canteen Board, stated to-day that recently £3250 was distributed to various fighting forces from profits made in the various canteens. This brings the total distrij hution to date to £16.230, of which ; £12.550 had been distributed to the | Army, £3150 to the Air Force and £530 ;to the Navy. These sums have been i handed over to the headquarters or j each of the services, which in turn disi tribute the sums to the camps and units. "The board has been established since November, 1939," said Mr. Jones, "and now conirots canteen services at 23 de« fence establishments in New Zealand, and has also a canteen on the Mono* wai. facilities provided in these camps include dry and wet canteens, cafej terias, milk bars, cinemas, hairdressing saloons, photography, laundry, drycleaning and other amenities of all kinds. • j "Goods for which there is a regular demand are on sale in the canteens, I and low-scale selling prices comparable j with those obtainable, in chain stores have been fixed, while for certain popular lilies in general demand special low prices have been., arranged. Profits rrom trading are periodically distributed to various forces and used for the purpose of providing the men with sports gear and other social benefits. "The canteen services provide a convenient method of servicing troops with high-quality goods at the lowest prices." Mr. Jones concluded. "Moreover, all profits are used entirely for the benefit of the men."
