MONETARY RUNS WIDE • DEFEAT OF HOT FAVOURITE [by telegraph—own correspondent] C'HRISTCHURCH, Sunday There were only four starters in the Middle Park Plato at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Midsummer Meeting yesterday, and Monetary carried nearly four times as many tickets as Pleading and Willow Wood. Monetary showed a disinclination to face the barrier and lie had to be led in. All got away on terms, Willow Wood showing out from Pleading and Palfrey as they reached the i course proper, with Monetary making his run wide out. Pleading drew to the front and Monetary, boring out, threw out a strong challenge. Although lie was straightened up in tho last few strides, he was beaten by a neck by Pleading. Palfrey finished strongly into third place, a length in front of Willow Wood. Six starters for the Midsummer Handicap provided an interesting race most of the way. Gay Parade soon rushed to the front and with half a mile covered he had a break of six lengths from Sovereign Lady and Settlement, with Trench Fight and Winning Rival handy. There was no change to the turn info the straight, _where Sovereign Lady and Settlement retired, and Winning Rival began to reduce the gap to Gay Parade. Trench Fight and Wardress also put in short-lived claims. Winning Rival drew past Gay Parade and outstayed him in the last few strides. Wardress was a fair third, three lengths in front of Trench Fight. Settlement broke down badly two furlongs from home and he was pulled up. Not Out, tho favourite for the Craven Plate, led early in the race from Rebel Mute, Doria and Epic. Skyrena and Good Passage were slow to move and Synthetic was squeezed back lo last place. Not Out entered the straight tn front of Rebel Mate and Doria. King's Toast and Good Passage were then coming into prominence, but Doria was tho j only one seriously to threaten Not Out, who, I nevertheless, had a very easy win. King's Toast finished brilliantly to beat Rebel Male on the post for third money, a length in front of Good Passage. Skyrena, Chary and The Wrecker were next.
