FIRES IN CHURCHES
FIVE IN FOUR DAYS INCENDIARIST SUSPECTED [iKOM OUR OWN COKRKSPONOKNT] SYDNEY, Jan. 12 The police believe that five fires in Sydney churches within four days were the work of an ineendiarist. Four of the fires were in or near cribs of the Kativitv. The first two fires were in St. Benedict's. Roman Catholic Church, in tho western' part ol the city, aijd tho Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. Dariinghurst, in the eastern part. Not much damage was done in either church. The most serious damage was dono in Christ Church St. Laurence, probably tho "highest" of Sydney Anglican churches. The (ire destroyed the Nativity scene statuary and mural panelling .valued at £IOO. The rector, Father John Hope, said: "Only a person with a warped brain could commit such an act of vandalism. I am more sorry for that person than angered." Ihe other two fires were in St. Nicholas' Church (Anglican) and St. Brigid s Roman Catholic Church, both at'Coogee, a sensjde suburb.
