ENGINEDRIVER'S REPORT [by TELEGRAPH OWN" correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday The driver of a Palmorston NorthNapier goods train which passed through Dannevirke at about 4 a.m. on Saturday morning reported to the stationniaster that the engine had struck an obstruction on the line within a few* feet of a lerel crossing. The locomotive and track were not materially damaged, only the brake gear under the engine being bent. An investigation showed tha* a round block of hardwood timber loiii. in length and about 9in. to lOin. in diameter had been placed on the track. on top of which apparently had been a beer bottle, as pieces of broken glass were strewn along the permanent way. The wooden block was carried some distance by the engine before' it was thrown clear and tile train brought to a standstill.
A serious view is being taken of t'ua matter and tlie police are investigating.
