THAMES MEETING

RANDWICK RESULTS

OPENING ON SATURDAY goldfields cup contest REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS Much interest is being manifested in the Thames Jockey Club's Annual .Meeting which is to be held at Parawai on Saturday and Monday. The acceptances for the first day are good and there are 14 horses in the chief event, the Goldliehis Cup. The Trial Handicap has attracted a field of 27-, hut it will be unnecessary to make provision |iir divisions as the safety-number at the M\-i'iirli>»g start is 28. The hotting will b.> under the win and place system and the first race is timed to start .it noon. Among <•»' acceptors for the 0 old fir I sis Cup Minilaw, who won in into with 7.1. On this occasion lie has s.l, but his form has improved considerably in the meantime and he lnit< excellent prospects of. winning again. His latest efforts have been consistently Rood and in two starts at the summer carnival at jEiierslie he was fourth in the Auckland Cup and iliird in tHe Auckland Racing Club Havumap- The topweight, Cold Vaals, made u reappearance after a spell at the Auckland Pacing iflub's Slimmer Meeting and, although he failed to show up in either of his races, .'his condition indicated that lie might not he : Jong in returning to form. At his best Gold j Vaals would have rosy prospects. Position of Clinch It is some time since Golden Sheila displayed any form and on her latest efforts she is but a shadow of her old self. It is against her ;hat she has reached an age where deterioration may be expected and there ma.v tie no disposition to entrust her with much confidence until she shows some sign of returning to form. All has not gone well with Clinch s nee he fell in the Waikato Cup at Te llapa in November and he failed to display any dash when he ran in the Christmas Handicap at KUerslie on Boxing l.)ay. The firm tracks in the past couple of months have not been to the advantage of Clinch, but on his day he is a very capable performer mid should help to make it interesting if he reaches the post fit. The Dozer has not appeared since he ran at Whangarei in December, when he won easily on the first day and ran disappointingly on the second. All was not well with The' Dozer some weeks ago, but It. (tray has (riven•• him every chance to® recover and he promises to strip in good order, in which fase |) P >hou!d be one of the hardest to beat. Another very useful performer is Clipper, whose latest performance was to run second to Olympus in the Glasgow Handicap, seven furlongs, at KUerslie. Clipper has shown that he can run a mile and a-quarter solidly and he should .make a forward showing. Forest Acre Improved Forest Acre has revealed improved form this season and he was responsible for a very creditable performance in winning the Phinket Handicap, one mile, at the summer carnival at KUerslie. With 8.0. he should ! . give a good account of himself. Pern lias been disappointing and has not run at all well since finishing second to Our Jean in the Waikato Cup. If he were to repeat that form, he would be well in the picture. ErliCk showed some of his former dash when he led for the greater part of the way in the ijafchans' Memorial Handicap at KUerslie and. although he tired quickly in the straight, he did well enough to indicate that he is returning to form. Pocket Venus has a sequence of, unplaced performances against her. but this is the class of race iit which she might go well with a !icrht weight. High Delight was third last rear, but he does not appeal. Gay Rosette has 'made rapid improvement in the past couple of months and she might not find promotion from hack to ooen company a bar To further success. She has yet to go beyond a mile, hut her breeding and perform- . ances indicate that middle, distances will not be bevond her. Town Section and Hisrh Sea have 'filled minor placings in their latest ontinss, hut their form has not been particularly enrou raging. The race bears an open aspect and some who may be in demand are Mintlaw. The Dozer, Clipper and " Clinch. Smart Field In Sprint 1 Some smart sprinters appear in the Flying 1 Handicap, which is headed by Sure Fay with £l2 The latest form of .Sure Pay has been consistently good and. although he ran unplaced at "his last start, he was by no means disgraced anions the best sprinters at Eners]ie Dinkv Di is another improver and the fact that lie was close behind the placegetters in the Newmarket.. Handicap at Elierslie should not be overlooked in assessing prospects here, Maxam ha& not appeared jnst, lately, Imt she has ,a good record on country 'courses and this is a race in which phe should have a good chance if produced fit. , . . , The erratic Cold Money Song is nicely placed with 8.3 and should he prominent if fie repeats his best. After running a good fourth in the Railway Handicap, lie was well beaten in two other starts at Elierslie and probably may have been feeling the effects of a very hard race on the first day. If he has freshened up in the meantime. Gold Monpy Son?, should he prominent. Miss Te Koura has failed in her latest races, but she is at her best on country courses and should have prospects, especially as the turning track may be in her favour. I nlliarch is also a possibility and the likeliest of the other light-weights may be Sir Robin and Gar Seton. Some who may Sure Pay, Miss Te Koura and Gold Monu Song.
