CHAMPION JOCKEY RICHARDS AND HIS RIVALS With a victory on Turkhan in the substitute St," Leger run at Thirsk on November 23. | Gordon Richards passed another milestone in 1 his phenomenally successful race-riding career, finishing champion jockey of England for the fourteenth time in fifteen years. Richards has yet to ride the winner of a Derby. Last year he rode Tant Mieux, a stable companion of the winner. Pont 1' Eveque. Two years previously he was in the same position when he had the mount on Pasch, the stable providing a less fancied winner in Bois Koussel. He added the Lincolnshire and Cesarewitdi Handicaps to his list for the first time in 1940. . 4n spite of the serious -difficulties under winch the sport was conducted. Richards had a yosy season, having: 344 mounts, of which 68 were winner?, 53 second and 45 third. His winning tally of just under *2O per cent was s little better than his average. Once again H. Wrags: filled the role of runner-up to Richards, bis tallv beinjr P.S wins, 2. seconds and 25 thirds from 221 rides Third was E. Smith, with ::7 winners from 32S mounts; M. Beary. with 30 wins from 277 rifles, was fourth: W. Nevett, 21 wins from 210 mounts, was fifth; and D. Smith, with 21 successes out of 281. was sixth. t The leading apprentice riders were again G. Liftlewood, who had i:\ winners out of 101; K. Mullins, 11 winners out of ISO, and R. Lacey. who rode nine winners in SO mounts.
