Cutting, Gladioli

T "' is a. right and a, wrong method of cutting gladioli. If any considerable amount of the foliage' growth is removed, the conns will undoubtedly suiter. It is sheer waste to sla<h away leaves which ynly have to be snipped off afterwards. It is a simple matter to cut without taking any foliage wha 1 soever. A sharp pointed penknife should be slabbed through the sheath of leaves and the stein at the required height. Then, holding the stem clear of the folage, twist the spike gently in each direction with the lingers. With a little practice ii will be found that, after one or two twists, the stem can be drawn clear from its sheath of leaves, leaving all the foliage to nourish tip the conns for another season. With exhibitors, who invariably have at least a lew expensive varieties, this is not a point to be ignored, and in any case, there is no need to cut short the growing period of the swelling new conn.
