THE CITY MARKETS
TOMATOES PLENTtFUL Heavy supplies of tomatoes were offered on the City Markets yesterday, and there was little demand for small and inferior fruit. A few choice New Zealand grapefruit realised high values, and there was a keen demand for raspberries and what few loganberries were . available. Good quality Otago apricots brought very satisfactory prices, while hothouse grapes and dessert peaches had a fair inquiry. Plums were easier. There were heavy supplies of most vegetables, onions, cucumbers and pumpkins realising lower values, and potatoes, beans and marrows also selling very cheaply. Supplies of cabbage were short and, with carrots, brought high rates for good lines. Prices were:— Fruit. —Apples, cookers and various, 10s to 12s a case; Astraclian, 12s to 18s yd; Gravenstein, 12s to JoS; tomatoes, hothouse, 2d to (id per lb; outdoor, 2d to 40d; Bananas, 13s to 29s a case; grapefruit, New Zealand, 20s to 23s lid; lemons, 9s yd to 19s Gd a U-busliel case; peaches, dessert, 3-tray crate, Ss (id to lis a crate; case, -Is Gd to Us a case; Wiggins and Carmen, -ts Gd to r>s Gd; plums, cooking, ■ls to ss; Sultan and choice, hs to 7s; others, 4s (id to 5s Gil; Burbank, 3s to 4s (id; purple king, 8s to 9s; Santa Rosa, Ss to 10s; grapes, hothouse.
