Phone 46-683, t t it Democracy and freedom, the great watchwords of the hour, are inseparably bound up with the cause of education. It is through education that the rights and privileges of democracy have been slowly won, and it is only through education of the right type that this heritage will be held secure in days to come. In the present deadly struggle in which the Empire, and indeed the world, is engaged the relation between education and noble leadership is emerging with increasing clarity. The young New Zealanders who are daily adding fame to their country's name are for the most part proudly claimed as the product of one or the other of our secondary schools. It was there many of them learned to think imperially and to do and dare without thought of self. The debt of humanity and of civilisation to the schools is indeed one that cannot be overestimated. Late or soon in the days that lie ahead peace will return. The boys and girls whose education is now being planned will happily be called on not to die for their country but to live for it and guide it into " ways of pleasantness and paths of peace." Never will sound and broad education be more sorely needed than in the facing of those vast problems of reconstruction that are even now beginning to disclose themselves. Perplexing and painful as many of those problems must be, they will nevertheless present an unparalleled opportunity for sweeping away the wrongs and miseries of the world that is now being laid in ruins and ushering in a new day of brotherhood and justice and understanding. Happy will those be, called on .to face that reconstruction, whose bodies and minds have been prepared by sound training to play their part worthily and effectively. 7he Dominion has just cause to be proud of its education systeni, which moves steadily with the times and succeeds in presenting learning in ever more attractive and elective form. In Auckland the opportunities for young people of both sexes for study and development of their powers are rich and varied. There are the main secondary schools with their elaborate equipment and wide choice of courses, the technical schools devoted largely to the production of skilled craftsmanship, and the commercial colleges designed to prepare the way for successful entry into business. Many of the classes are held at times when they can be taken by students engaged at work during the day, and for those who are entirely prevented from attending classes there are care-fully-designed correspondence courses. Perhaps never was greater responsibility placed upon educators than to-day. Not only have they to prepare the minds of the coming generation to face vast changes with courage and understanding, but they have to develop in them a sound judgment that will enable them successfully to resist all the floods of subtle propaganda that are reaching every corner of the world to-day. Any tendency, therefore, to let education be thrust aside by apparently more urgent needs must be strongly resisted, for the right to unhindered learning is one of the fundamental values for which the Empire is willing to stake its existence to-day. fit yourself for Call, phone for particulars.
