Choosing a Career Responsibility of Parents 'Joy in Occupation Vocational guidance, which aims at finding for each child its proper place in the life of the community, has sprung very much into prominence during recent years with the increasing interest taken in psychology, and its development into an experimental science. Enthusiasm goes a very long way, but it cannot carry anybody on Indefinitely in a career for which he haa no real aptitude, and a very great deal of energy is expended which might more profitably be directed into more suitable channels. The "fight the job down" mentality has certainly brought auccea# to tons people, but tha fruits of it for others are too often weariness and discouragement, and a bad inferiority complex. Many people can speak on this matter from bitter experience. Joy in occupation is the greatest gift any good fairy could bestow upon a child, find though the right job does sometimes fall from the skies upon the right person, it is fatuous to depend upon that happening, and the parent should seriously consider, not merely what will be the most lucrative occupation for young Timothy or for Jane, but what occupation will make them happiest and enable them to make the best use of their talents, and thus to become the beat possible citizens. Man does not live by bread alone, and also he was not made to live alone; he ia a social animal, and unless he be a freak of nature he desires to fit into the surroundings in which he finds himself, and not to find himself, through lack of guidance, a square peg in a round hole, at variance with everyone.
