REMUERA WATER SUPPLY
_ i Sir,—l trust the ratepayers of Renin- j era and Tamaki will make a. strung j and united protest against the high- | handed and inconsiderate attitude oH the Auckland City Council in completely i depriving them of the use of hoses for | gardening purposes, and also that all j will make a demand on the council for | a refund of a proportion of their hose ! and sprinkler licences, the position j being that they have paid lor a service j that the council now declines to give) 'them. It is not very long since the | City Council, at much expense, eon-j strutted an additional reservoir on the j top of Mount Hobson. The fact that J this is still inadequate, after a com- i paratively short spell of dry weather, | suggests that there has some (lo- j plorable short-sightedness somewiiere. : It is all very well to cry that water! is required to assist the "war effort" j merely because water is supplied from this reservoir to the freezing works at ; West field; hut surelv there is some-j thing very peculiar about the system j of reticulation when water for the free/.- ! iug works has to he drawn from such I a distant point as Mount: Hobson. | The coun< il says in effect that Renin-; era ami Taniaki residents are being punished because hoses there have j been run at night. Surely it is not sug- 1 gested that this is the only suburb; in which this occurs. In any case,'the j proper remedy is to detect and punish the guilty persons instead ol penal is j ing all the residents, it is also stated. , as if in reproach, that the amount: j of wafer consumed in those areas is one-third more per head than in other! districts. This is easily explained b.v ' the larger size of the propenics, comparison would undoubtedly show that the sections in Remtiera. on an average, are at least a third larger than those in oilier suburbs. Remuera is n suburb of gardens and garden-lovers. Through the City Council's ineflicieney or lack of foresight, its residents are now victimised at a time when, subject to the requirements of the community as a whole, thev have a right to expect the fullest list! (, l the civic services lor which they pay. li must he very amusing to North Shore people, after all the large talkabout the ''ity's unlimited supplies of water, that after about three weeks' dry spell it has now had to order two oi its largest and most attractive suburbs to put away the hoses.
