NEW ZEALAND TOURNEY PAIRS CONTEST COMMENCED ELIMINATION OF G. DEARE [by telegraph —tress association] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday The New Zealand bowling championship tourney "was continued to-day, when section play in the pairs was held. At the end of the day's play 80 pairs had qualified for the post-section stages, which will be decided on the sudden death principle. The feature of the day was the close finishes, many games on all the greens being decided on the last head. 'Hie highlight of the day's piny was the elimination of the Auckland pair, G. A. Deare, last year's singles champion, and W. Bremner, winner of last year's pairs. Starting off with a win against the Westport pair, B. Jenkins and A. J. Green, 22—16, they -scored again against the well-known Spreydon player, W. Wardell, 19 —15. After lunch Dcare and Bremner met H. Jofcoate. and IT. Benson and lost to them by one point, 16 —10. In the last game Deare and Bremner were opposed by J. Hadley and 1!. Bond (I. in wood) and went down, | 18—16. Auckland Pair's Success On th e Sumner green G. H. and C. E. Claridge (St. Kilda) won three games out of four. R. Haworth (Canterbury), playing with his son, C. A. Haworth (Wanganui), had only three wins, being beaten by the Auckland pair, H. Gribble and W. lire. A. Dey, who had A\. S. Seed leading, put up a high score against L. G. Scrimshaw and T. Edwards (Tcmuknt. but could secure only three wins. G. G. Ad ess, with J. Dmvland (St. Kilda) as skip, failed to qualify after winning the first two games. M. J. Squire (Hawera), whose early elimination was one of the surprises of the singles. wa.s partnered by H. S. Marlin. and struck form again to qualify with four wins. T. A. McClymont CPonsonby), another who made a good showing in the singles, was partnered by D. Jury, and won his four games on the XJiiited green. C. H. Kettle* (Nelson), one of the surviving seven in the singles, had H. G. Kingsland as lead and continued to show good form, winning all his games.
Surprise Elimination Another surprise came when J. P. Smith (Elwood), whose excellent plav left him only two lives in the singles, collapsed in the pairs. Partnered by E. •T. Cooke, another of the last seven in the singles, Smith won his first game 29—10, but then, went down 18—17 to S. Wright (Thorndon), 18 —12 to H. H. Hey (Opawa) and 20—10 to D. Rewcastle (Dunedin). C. Spearman, a former singles champion, looks liking making a strong bid for high honours this year. The Alloo Brothers, of Owaka. qualified with four mns and P Munn (Canterbury), with C. H. Elsom as lead, and F. Livingstone (Orielnmga), with J. W. T. Macklow as lead, got three wins each and will go forward. •T. S. Martin, of Auckland, playing with his brother, P. G. Martin, failed in one game, but reaches post-section play due to the large entry and the fact that a record number of pairs goes forward to post-section play with only three wins to their credit.
