CRASH AFTER CHASE
MISSING MOTOR-CAR
POLICE PATROL PURSUIT THREE YOUTHS ARRESTED A small motor-car was chased through the Epsom, One Tree Hill and Remuera districts at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday by a police patrol. It overturned and was wrecked at the corner of Hemuera Road and Green Lane. None of the occupants was injured. The owner of the car, Miss Joan A. Barry, a schoolteacher, of 23 Atherton I'oad, Kpsom, reported on Friday night that it had been taken from a parking place in the city two hours before. Supplied with the number of the missing car, police officers in the night patrol car checked all cars they met, but it was not until 4.30 the next morning that they came upon the one they sought, travelling south along Manukau Road, its number-plates turned upside down. The police car signalled the driver to stop, but the small car gathered speed. After a long pursuit it crashed at the corner of Remuera Road and Green Lane Road. Part of the roof was torn away, one side of the body was twisted and the front damaged. Later that morning Neville Hugh Coughey. aged 19, a rope worker. John Alfred ' I'urchess, aged 20, a labourer, and lan Keith Britten, aged JO. labourer, appeared before Mr. J. Morling. S.M., in the Police Court, and were charged with unlawfully converting a motor-car valued at £'lso. Upon the application of Detective-Sergeant .1. Wal.-h. the accused were remanded until next Friday. Bail of £'loo each was allowed, provided they reported daily to the police.
