BATHER DROWNED

AUCKLAND RESIDENT DISAPPEARANCE IN RIVER BODY RECOVERED LATER [by TELEGRAPH —OWN" correspondent] YTRAKATANE, Friday A Tonus man from Auckland was drowned while swimming in the W hakatano River about three miles from Taneatua this afternoon. The victim was: — Mr. Roy Henry James Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Clark, of 10 Princess Avenue, Mount Roskill. In company with two friends, Mr. Clark went for a swim shortly after two o'clock, and after bein<£ in the water for a little while ho suddenly disappeared. He was not seen .again by his companions, and the Whakatane police were called. The body was recovered about two hours later about 100 yds. downstream. At the point where Mr. Clark disappeared the river flows fairly rapidly, and there are numerous snags in the river bed. Mr. Clark arrived from Auckland by tho express yesterday afternoon to spend a holiday with friends in the Taneatua district. An inquest will be opened to-morrow before tho district coroner, Mr. C. Brabent.

Friday The bodv was recovered this morning from Pelorus River, near Canvastown, of Mr. Thomas William Harris, single, 28. who was drowned late yesterday afternoon. Mr. Harris was one of a party of Chrisfohurch motor campers who were bathing, when deceased got out of his depth in a deep pool. He was unablo to swim.
