Greeting the New Year

PEAR boys and girls,— -N just a few more day, 1940 will be no more and we will welcome a baby 1 New Year. And in honour of the New Year', coming we make hosts of X ambitious resolutions which somehow seem to be very difficult to keep during the year. „ . Now, boys and girls, 1 certainly don't want to give you a lecture, but just a few suggestions for the coming year. Perhaps, just now, the most important thing is to resolve to keep smiling. You must have noticed how much brighter everything seemed on Christmas Day. No cross words spoken and no one ' quarrelling over the new train, or sister Betty's new annual. Everyone was _ ay a nd ready to share their pleasures with others. I wonder why we can't be like that all the year round! Let's try in 1941. I'm sure we'll feel ever so much happier ourselves if we do. And another important thing. Let's try not to be co_wnrds (for most of us ar e cowards about some little thing). Sometimes we cry when we're hurt or we 're afraid to be alone in the dark—oh, there are ever so many things of which we are frightened, but really noting is nearly as bad as it seems, and as we grow older we learn how foolish we have been. But I know it is very, very difficult sometimes, so do let us resolve that throughout 1941 we will try to pluck up more courage when the little coward imps surround us. And when we are smiling and being very brave there is not much more to do because then we feel we can cheer others and help them whenever they want it; and that, boys and girls, really why we are here at all! So now that we have finished this solemn business of resolutions we can no out to greet the New Year with happy hearts and laughter. There s much to do these holidays—ever so many tramps, swims, days at the beach, on the farm, up in the cool, quiet bush, or just • 4 . lazing about in the sunshiny garden like (Jl J a . »' my puss, Grey Malcolm. But whatever I \-l I%]JLM . do these gay, blue days, I wish you Uf]kfl ' the jolliest of fun and all good luck in If' the year that is to come. I Much love to you all from
