CRICKET SEASON

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES SOFT WICKETS EXPERIENCED BATSMEN ON THE DEFENSIVE Matches in the Auckland senior cricket championship at Eden Park on Saturday were delayed for nearly two hours owing to heavy rain aflecting the wickets. The pitches received a soaking on Friday night and further rain on Saturday morning affected them to such an extent that they were unplayable for some time. Teams winning the toss took the precaution of putting their opponents in to hat, a policy which was justified by the subsequent play. In mo.it. cases the batsmen were on the defensive and runs were difficult to get. In the main attraction on No. 2 wicket. M. Matheson. to meet Wellington at the Basin Reserve at Christmas: — P. E. Whiteiaw (Papakura Camp). G. Burgess (Eden), 11. T. Pearson (Middlemore), G. L. Weir, captain (Eden), V. Scott (Y.M.C.A.). O. G. Cleal (Ponsonby-Balnioral), J. A. R. Blandford (Middlemore). H. Harrison (Eden), C. Burke (Grafton), D. C. Cleverley (Middlemore,), F. M. Andrews (Middlemore). Twelfth man: A. V. Wiles (Ponsonby-Balnioral). With W. M. Wallace, J. Cowie, H. G. Vivian and V. S. Sale not available, the Auckland side does not present such a formidable appearance as usual. The selection of the team has caused Mr. Matheson considerable trouble, and its announcement has been delayed through certain players beinii doubtful as to whether they could secure leave. However, taking into consideration the limited material at his disposal, the selector Jiiis assembled a solid all-round combination. Cowie and Vivian would have given great fnrce to the attack, but the captain of the side, G. L. Weir, has a varied array of bowling talent at his command, which, with careful handling, should give good results. Harrison, who will assist Cleverley with the fast attack, can be dangerous when in his best form, but the brunt of the work will probablv fall on the Middlemore player. Andrews Scott, Weir and Cleal should prove useful as medium-paced bowlers, while variety will be added by Burke with his slow spinThe rapidly-improving Ponsonby-Balnioral player Cleal seems likely to be called on to open the innings with Whiteiaw. He has the tal»nt and the temperament to make a success. of the task. Burgess, another promising colt has been given a chance, and his performances will be watched with interest. I'he team, with such seasoned batsmen as Whitelaw, Weir, Pearson, Scott and Blandford, should make plenty of runs. Many Auckland enthusiasts will repjret the fact that Mr. Matheson has not included himself in the selection. His all-round ability and experience would have greatly strengthened the side. AUCKLAND B ELEVEN The following Auckland B team has been chosen to play the Auckland City and Suburban representatives on December 25 and 20:—I). B. Edmonds, 11. G. Walters (North Shore), I"). I). Taylor (Middlemore), .T. B. Stevenson. IT. S. Mills (Training College), R. Johns, F. Warrington ('Eden), W. M. Winter, A. M. Matheson, captain (University), ('. Lund (Y.M.C.A.), R.
