INTER-lIOUSE CONTEST OUTER-SUBURBAN EVENT CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES A decision to inaugurate a business houses' competition in the outer-suh-urban districts for a trophy donated by the Passenger Transport Company was made at a meeting of tho executive of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. Approximately 20 business houses and institutions have been approached and favourable replies have been received from the majority. Tho donors of the trophy also offered to donate miniature cups for the members of the team winning the competition for the first year. It was proposed that the teams should consist of four men each and that doubles only bo played. The rules of the well-known I'ascoe Cup competition would be adopted, with the suggested variation that, each team should have two lives. Matches would be. played during the week-ends on the Windmill Road courts. Messrs. Cleal, Johns and Hall were appointed a sub-committee to arrange details. The success of the ladies' mid-week competition inaugurated this season was commented on by tho president, Air. ,S. A. Cleal, who said that in many cases the players had been so enthusiastic that return matches had been arranged outside, the competition. Air. Cleal announced that the following commiltee had been appointed to control the Auckland championships:—Messrs. A. Ohlson (manager), J. K. S. Hall (assistant-manager), J. Fernandez, ,T. S. Broun, A. Eraser, J. AlcKain. Attention was drawn to tho right reserved by the committee to declare that, in any senior event in which men were engaged, the title should not be at stake. The 'championships will be commenced on Jannary at (lie Stanley Street courts. The executive decided to allocate two silxer cups to the winners of the men's doubles event at the Auckland championships, the cups to lie known as the W. Griffiths Memorial Cups" in memory of the late Afr. E. W. Griffiths, a former holder of the title. Mr. C. F. Ellis tendered Ins resignation from the cxec.iiti-ve and this was accepted with regret, the vacancy being filled by the election of Air. J. S. Broun, of tho Eden and Epsom club. Mr. A. Johns reported that the first series of ranking matches had been concluded and that great keenness had been displayed. In a few cases, however, players who had been notified of the matches had failed to appear on the appointed day and liad offered no explanation or excuse. It was suggested that such players should bo omitted from subsequent, rajikiug matches. This proposal met with general approval and tho necessary power was given to the ranking committee.
