RARE NATIVE PLANT

KEEPING LOCALITY SECRET [BY TELEGRArn —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday A special petrol licence was granted last month to tho Christchurch Botanic Gardens staff to photograph "a certain very rare native plant" while it was in flower. This information was given in a routine report of the director of the gardens, Mr. J. A. McPherson, to a meeting of the Domains Board. i "We wish to keep the whereabouts of this plant secret to protect it from the predatory hands of misguided so-called collectors of native plants," said Mr. McPherson later in response to an inquiry. "The plaeo and plant are known to leading New Zealand botanists and to some members of the board's staff, but it is so rare that we will not disclose the locality." A few of the seeds of the plant were obtained last year, he said, and were sent to Edinburgh and to Kew Gardens.
