HONOUR CONFERRED
ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP UNIVERSITY ENGLISH SCHOLAR The title of associate professor in English was conferred on Mr. P. S. Ardern by the Auckland University College Council at a meeting yesterday, in recognition of his distinction in philological scholarship and the high reputation of his learning in Old and Middle English. The appointment will carry an increase in salary. The following minute was placed on record:—"Mr. Ardern is recognised as ono of the most distinguished philologists in Australia and New Zealand. His wide knowledge of languages, classical and modern, has made him
especially equipped for bis work on the language side of the English department. Mr. Ardern has given service to the college since 1910, and in view of his special linguistic scholarship he lias had special responsibility in the teaching work of the English department." The president, Mr. W. H. Cocker, said that during the past few years Mr. Ardern prepared for student use editions and grammars which were used in the department instead or 111 the absence of printed works. The lack of satisfactory editions and grammars in the English language for the purposes of linguistic study was fiillv made up by Mr. Ardern through his independent study, compilation and research. Professor E. J'. Worley, chairman of the Professorial Board, said the recognition was made for outstanding scholarship and not for long service. Mr. Ardern attended the meeting, and was congratulated by members of the council, in addition to Professor W. A. Sewell. professor of English, who recommended the council's action.
