DROWNED IN RIVER
BOY'S CANOE CAPSIZES [by TELEGRAPH OWN* CORKESf'OXnEN'r] WHAKATANE. Monday A verdict of accidental drowning was returned by the district coroner, Mr. G. A. Brabant, at an inquest into the death of Robert Loonies, aged 15, who lost his life when his canoe capsized in the Whakatano River on November 10. A companion stated that together with a third boy they had paddled their canoes down to the heads and were returning up the river at about 6 p.m. They landed at a groin where deceased said his canoe Lad some water in it. Witness advised him to wait and they would give assistance in baling out. Deceased paddled to the end of the groin where his canoo was caught by the strong current and capsized. Deceased disappeared.
