MANY MAORIS ENGAGED ACTIVITIES ON 'WHALE ISLAND [by TELEGRAPH—OW.NT correspondent] WHAKATAXE., Monday About 180 Maoris from all parts of ~ the Whakatane County are at present engaged in catching and preserving mutton birds on Whale Island; Indications are that tin; yield.-will exceed that of previous years, although owing to the prevailing conditions only one launch has'returned from the island. The number of Maoris engaged this year is a record and the task of transporting them and their equipment to the island was a difficult one. .Seven trips were made by the Whakatane Harbour Board's launch and a number of private launches were also engaged.
