SUCCESS OF GREEK ARMS

The last of the Italian invaders has been driven from Greek soil. This news, authoritatively sent from the scene of action, will evoke many a cheer for the gallant defenders of their country. They have done well; surprisingly well, it may be added, without suggesting that there was doubt of either their skill or their courage in the face of the invader. That invader, at all events, has been surprised. Italian expectation of an easy campaign and an early conquest was confidently declared. However, the Greek resistance was speedily organised, and it soon, gave proof of ability to strike back with increasing force. Capably led and imbued with patriotic zeal, it obstructed and broke the onslaught, winning successes so fully authenticated that no Italian belittling of them could get credence anywhere. The satisfactory outcome

of this first exchange of blows is due, in a supreme degree, to the quality of the Greek defiance. It has b6en aided by British arms, in pursuance of the British guarantee, and Italy has been made to feel the strength and resourcefulness of this opposing factor, which will still be in operation; but this cannot detract from the honour crowning the Greek exploits. The enemy, it must be assumed, will return to the attack, and in the undoubted development of Axis diplomacy it would be foolish to think that the safety of Greece is assured. Nevertheless, her leaders and people have proved their mettle and can with good heart face whatever may have to bo confronted. One thing is certain : their splendid bearing in the first phase of the conflict will impress every potential ally with the conviction that help to them will be worth while.
