HANDICAPPING SYSTEM VARIOUS CHANGES MADE PENALTY FOR DEFAULTERS Various recommendations for a better system of handicapping submitted by the handicapping committee were adopted by the Auckland Swimming Centre last night. Tho allowance by which juniors and intermediates aro permitted to better their assessed times to avoid disqualification was increased from two to three seconds. Tho handicapping committee was authorised to arrange hcat3. The question of deterring swimmers from defaulting from handicap events for which they had entered was carefully discussed. It was decided that entrants not competing without reasonable excuse should be charged double tho entry fee as a penalty. Tho introduction of time trials for tiny-tot swimmers prior to the contests for which they had nominated was approved. The centre agreed upon tho promotion of a carnival in the Tepid Baths on December 10. It was resolved that affiliated city clubs should combino with tho centro in financing tho carnival. Tho Ponsonby Club was granted permission to hold on December 7 the annual harbour race from Western Wharf to Shelly Beach Baths for the Wai Wai Shield. Tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association intimated that it had been in communication with the Newmarket Club in connection with the club's proposal to invite Australian lady champion swimmers to compete in New Zealand. The council approved of preliminary negotiations being made by the club, provided the Auckland Centro supported the project and backed the official invitation to tho extent of combining with it, should the club find itself unable to do so. The matter was deferred until the Newmarket Club had had an opportunity of examining the council's conditions. The council advised that tho New Zealand championship meeting for juniors, intermediates and ladies would commence at New Plymouth on .January 25. The decision of the annual conference of the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association that the competition for tho Yaldhurst Shield should bf abolished during the war, and that the honorary secretary to the New Zealand Council should draft the necessary amendments to the rules, was referred ta by Mr. D. Mulvihill. He moved that, subject to the agreement of Dr. T. 11. Pettit, the centre's delegate to the conference, the centre should recommend to tho New Zealand Council that the shield should be awarded for tho senior ladies' events. Tho motion was carried. Moreovor, it was resolved to request the council to amend the rules so that, for tho duration of tho war, intermediate girls might bo permitted to competo for senior New Zealand championships without losing their intermediate status.
