WORK OF SERVICE GUILD '.Llie third birthday celebration of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Auxiliary Service Guild took place on Sunday in the hospital lecture hall. The guests of honour were Bishop Liston and Mrs. A. I). Campbell, president of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary. J. E. Sutclifl'e presided in the absence of the president. JNlrs. .J. B. Callan. At the request of Mother M. Agnes the president and committee consented to hold office for the duration of the war. The work of the auxiliary was reviewed and it was stated that in the almoner department, funds provided by tin; Metropolitan Belief Committee were used for helping patients with extra comforts, food and medicine after they had left the hospital. Sewing bees had been responsible for 1550 garments made for hospital patients. Grants of £2OO had been received from art union funds, and a radio had been provided by Mr. and Mrs. Handson Abel who had also paid the licence fees and maintenance costs. In thanking the members for their work Mother Agnes said that from November, 19:19, to October, 1940, 1158 patients had been admitted to the public wards. Mrs. Campbell congratulated the guild on its work and Bishop Liston, in a brief address, traced the history of the hospital from its foundation years ago to the present day. Afternoon tea was served when a birthday cake, ornamented with three candles, was cut.
