ILLEGALLY ON SHIP
TWO MEN FINED PRISON FOR NIGHTWATCHMAN [BY THLKOKAI'H —IMIKSS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN. Saturday The first prosecution of its kind under the Shipping Safety Emergency Regulations was heard at the Police Court this morning, when Andrew McCuinnell Brown Stobie, Elizabeth Pearl Stobie and Eric Carl • Taylor were charged with hoarding a vessel without a permit, while William Woolworth jMcKcc, a member of the crew, Waldo Augustus Page, boatswain, and Hugh Hall'erty, nightwatchinan, were charged with allowing the other three aboard tlii'-. overseas vessel. The police stated the offence was considered a serious one, although there was no suggestion of sinister intent. The Scobies and Taylor were found aboard, stating that thev were taken there by Page. Hall'erty denied that he saw anyone come aboard, but all three visitors gave evidence that he was at the gangway head.
The magistrate, stating that the watchman had been guilty of a complete dereliction of duty, sentenced him to three months' imprisonment. Page was fined £lO and Seobie and Taylor £■3 each. Mrs. Stobie was merely convicted. The charge against McKee, who stated he had been in the boatswain's room to get his eiders, was dismissed.
