SECOND BALLOT

APPEALS, TOTAL 2045 MORE EXPECTED TO-DAY SOME FOR OTHER AREAS A total of 2045 appeals, affecting 1562 reservists out of the 8300 drawn in the second Territorial ballot, had been received by the Auckland Area Manpower Committee when the time for lodging applications closed 011 Saturday. However, it is expected that many further appeals that were posted 011 Saturday will swell the number to-day. Sorting the appeals kept the committee's staff busy until late on Saturday afternoon. It was found that in addition to those affecting Auckland area reservists, there was <1 large number for men in the Whangarei and Hamilton areas. These have been sent on to the correct committees. It is also .expected that these committees will have some appeals to send to the Auckland committee.

THE NORTHLAND AREA 700 APPLICATIONS IN HAND [from our 6wn correspondent] WHANGAREI, Sunday Appeals lodged by men in Northland called in the second ballot for territorial service number 700. Although yesterday was the final day for the lodgment of appeals, if they were posted yesterday they will be received. As the Jsorthland district covers such a wide area it will be some days before all appeals have been received at the National Service Department's office at Whangarei. From experience with first ballot appeals it is probable that there are some hundreds yet to be received.
