THEFT OF KIPPERS
SHIP COOK'S OFFENCE A charge of stealing 12 kippers valued at 2,s from a British ship was admit tori hv its chief cook. Lawrence Ferris Keeves, aged 40, before justices in the Police Court on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Calwell said accused's position placed him in charge of ship's stores, from which the kippers were stolen. Accused was accosted by a constable as he was leaving the wharf on Friday night and the parcel of fish was discovered in his clothing. Warned by the Bench to return to his ship, in view of the importance of his wartime occupation as a member of the mercantile navy, accused was convicted and discharged.
