OUTSTANDING SPRINTER
When J. Sutherland, the present New ZeaIn ml 300 yds champion, established a record of 'J3 i-5s for 220 yds at the Otago and Southland secondary .schools' championships two years ago, it was expected that it would be some time before it was. broken, states the Otago Daily Times. Tho" same thoughts were entertained, too. about his record of 51 :?-5s for the quarter-mile. However, both records were lowered by substantial margins. A powerfully-built sprinter. C. 0. Steel (Waitaki), actually broke the 220 yds record twice, but his run in tho morning of '.23 l-5s will stand as the record. Steel seems almost too heavy for a sprinter, and yet he won the 100 yds in 10 t-os against a stronc breeze. Another stronc runner, C. Elvidge, John McOlashan College, provided one of the best efforts of (he day in winning the 4-10 yds in ."i.'t 1-r.s, reducing the record by t-os. It was a great performance for a schoolboy, for many New Zealand and Olago titles have been won in slower time.
