RACES ON SATURDAY ROUGH WATER CONDITIONS RESULTS OF TRIAL FOURS Windy -weather made the harbour rough for trial fours racing on Saturday and tho conditions wore rather unpleasant, but tlie Auckland, Waiteinata and West End .Rowing Clubs managed to complete their events successfully. Waitemata Club. —The club rowed trial fours for the E. G. Bridgcns medals. There were five crews and, although the northerly wind made -water conditions unpleasant, the crews exhibited a good standard of oarsmanship. Results were:—First heat: H. Spoor, F. Weaver, A. Carbines, C. Mitchell. X; W. McGechie, if. Ali.son, J. Jones, I. Gray, 2; C. Cairns, R. Ockelford, G. Brown, I). Menzics, 3. Spoor went into the lead followed closely by McGechie and Cairns. There was some erratic steering after rounding the Point Resolution buoy and this enabled Spoor to increase iiis lead and gain the verdict by two lengths from McGechie, with Cairns a further two lengths away. Second heat: T. Conway, T. Fitzgerald, R. Steele, J. Ross, 1; R. Mikkleson, D. Fraser, X. Atkinson, J. Miller, 2. Conway took the lead from the start and maintained it throughout to win by three lengths. Final: The crews of Spoor and Conway met in the final. After the half-way mark Spoor started to draw away, but Conway quickened and drew level again. Spoor was ahead again at Point Resolution and maintained his lead to win by two lengths. Mr. 13. C. Hadfield was starter and Mr. C. C. Cairns judge. Auckland Club, —The Auckland club had entries of three crews for trial fours for the Pewter Cup. During the race one boat swamped after rounding the reef, but the crew was able to paddle it to the beach without difficulty. The result of the race was:—E. Richardson, F. Hewlett, K. Richards. J. Guiniven, 1; 0. Cossey, M. Holland. L. McXamara, G. Brierley, 2. After about ■IOO yards had been covered Richardson drew gradually ahead, and was able to keep in front, in spite of Cossey's challenges, and he passed the judge one and a-half lengths ahead. Mr. George Barrett was starter and Mr. \V. Hornabrook judge. West End Club.—Trial fours for the Mrs. John Clark Shield were rowed, four crews competing. Although the water conditions were not of the best a high standard of rowing was revealed. The course from the oil tanks to the Shelly Beach baths was used. Mr. E. A. Craies acted as judge. Crews in the first heat were: —E. F. I'aper, J. G. Knight. A. Coulam, J. Keen, I?. Weatherall (cox); G. S. Bigelow, I). O'Sullivan. W. Timmins, AV. Xankervl.s, E. Beckham (cox). From the start Bigelow drew ahead and at the gap had half a length lead. Raper slowly drew level and then took the lead. Bigelow challenged, but Raper won by one length. Second heait: J. H. Barton, Aircraftsman I. Macdonald, F. Tucker. R. C. Bigelow. R. Miller (cox); R. Alexander, G. Carder, E. F Johnson, L. Taylor, C, Beckham (cox). From a good start Alexander was first to show out and approaching the gap was a length ahead. Barton hegan to overhaul the leader, but Alexander increased the 6troke and held the, advantage to win by one length. Tile final was between the crews of Raner and Alexander. Raper was first to show out, ar.d at half-way he had a- length lead. Alexander closed the gap. but Raper's crew, •swinging well, increased its advantage, to win by a length and a-half.
