NINE YEARS IN IRON LUNG
Birdsall Sweet, 23- years old, of Beacon, New York State, believed to hold the record for time spent in an artificial respirator, lately completed nine years in the iron lung in Vassar Hospital, Poughkeepsie. When 14 years old, the youth, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Sweet, was stricken with infantile paralysis in Beacon. For a long time he was kept in the device continuously but, for some years, he has only spent in the respirator the hours lie sleeps or periods when he was fatigued.
