DEVONPOBT SHIELD TWO ROUNDS ON SATURDAY UNITED TEAM DEFEATED At the conclusion of tho fifth round of play in the Devonport Shield competition of the Auckland Hockey Association, St. Luke's, with 9 points, is leading from University A and United bv one point. Two rounds were played on Saturday afternoon at Hobson Park. Tho grounds were very hard and the ball ruse sharply. Light drizzling rain fell Inter in the afternoon. Twentyminute spells were played, and the experimental penalty corner rule introduced in the second round was in force again Following were the results: —Fourth round: United, 2, Grammar, 1; Training College, 3, Somerville, 2; University A, 3, Jlount Eden, 1; Albertians and St. Luke's won by default. Fifth round: St. Luke's, 3, United, 2; University A, 5, Somerville, 2; Grammar, ■l, Albertians, 3; Mount Eden and Training College won by default. United v. Grammar. —A fast pace was maintained throughout and play was open. Two speedy sets of forwards were matched, but United offered more reliable defence. A feature was the superb goalkeeping of Butler for United. At half-time the score was United, 1; Grnmniar, O. United gained the honours for the curly part of tho second spell. Ilalf-way through this spell, Jones, right fullback for United, left the field with an eye injury. Herriott (2) scored for United, while Ross netted for Grammar. Messrs. B. Watts and O. Cooke were tho umpires. Training College v. Somerville. —With a speedier vanguard, Training College had tho hetler of the first spell against Somorville, attacking for the greater part. Shortly beforo half-timo, however, the Somerville forwards broke through, and were on the offensivo when the interval came with the score:— Training College. 2: Somerville, 1. Midfield play, punctuated by sharp bursts of attacking, marked tho second spell, until, in the last 10 minutes, Soniervillo's vanguard took command and went close to equalising. For Training Collego Bedggood (2) and Yorke scored, while D. Stewart and Anderson netted for Somerville. Messrs. R. Martyn and S. White were the umpires. University A v. Mount Eden.—Displaying superior all-round combination, University was always on lop of the Alount Eden team. Among the University forwards, however, there was indecision in tho stickwork generally. but more especially in tho reception of passes. The half-timo score was:—University, 2; Mount Eden, 0. A better showing was made by Alount Eden in tho second spell. Worthy of mention was tho play of Mount Eden's fallbacks, Hughes, and A. Horsnool. For University, Crawloy, Cooper and Jones scored. Chambers was Afount Eden's solo scorer. Messrs. R. Cameron and T. Clark were tho umpires. St. Luke's v. United.—With Its team slightly rearranged, United was nnablo to produce the cohesion and understanding of its former match, having to admit defeat by one goal at tho hnnds of St. Luke's, which it had beaten tho previous week in tho Davis Cup championship final, fit. Luke's led at half-time by 2 goals to 1. In St. Luke's vanguard. Carroll was outstanding for fine Individual play, Fenton and Alontetth combined effectively in United's forward line. In this match, although fivo goals were recorded. they were all scored by two men. Carroll for St. Luke's, and Fenton for United. Messrs. A. Jackson and R Martyn were the umpires. University A v, Somerville.—A fine recovery was made by University, when it defeated Somerville after being down at halftimo, when tho score was:—Somerville, 2; University A, 1. Until the interval Somervillo had a territorial advantago. Upon the resumption, however. University scored three times in quick succession and was on top

until just before time, when Somerville retrained the offensive. In the University forward line, Cooper played a fine attacking came. Scorers for University A were Crawley 02). Jones. Wallace and B. Broun, while Anderson and Archibald netted for Somerville. Messrs. H. Watts and J. Bone were the umpires. Grammar v. Albertians. —In a game which was very fast considering the conditions. Grammar Old Boys secured a last-minute victory over Albertians by the odd goal In seven. In the first spell, Albertians spoiled many promising movements through indecision on the part of the forwards. The half-timo score was: Grammar, 3; Albertians, 1. Responsible for bright exhibitions were the opposing centre-forwards, Houghton and N. Bennett. For Grammar Old Boys. C'richton (2), Smith and Houghton netted. Kelscy (0) and Spatn scored for Albertians. Messrs. 0. Cooke and T. Clark were the umpires. RESULTS OF LOWER GRADES Second Grade.—Grammar, 4, Albertians, 2. Fourth Grade.—Waitemata, 3, MountEden, 1.
