TAUPO LAND CLAIM
SUPREME COURT ACTION
I/Ogal argument was heard by Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court yesterday in tlie case in which a Maori widow claims five and a-lialf acres of land at Taupo from the Crown. The land, which is valued at £SOOO by. the suppliant's counsel, Mr. Gould, is situated at the point whore the Waikato River leaves Lake Taupo. 'and includes the landing ground and wharf. The suppliant is Mrs. Ngaliuia Ripeka, aged 83, who claimed that the laud had been owned by the late chief, Te Poihipi Tukairangi, and that she was his legal successor to the title. On bqhalf of the Crown, the claim was opposed by -Mr. V. R. Meredith and Mr. N. I. Smith, who asserted that the property was a Crown reserve. His Honor said ho would take time to consider his decision and give it in writing, so that counsel might consider what further steps might he necessary.
