FORMER YACHTSMAN
MR. A. BUCHANAN'S DEATH INTEREST IN TRAVEL One of the most prominent figures in Auckland yachting circles for many years, Mr. Archibald Buchanan, died yesterday at his home in Victoria Avenue, Remuera. He was for a period the owner of the Rainbow, regarded as perhaps the finest keel yacht ever turned out from Logan Brothers' yard, and lie won a great number of races with her in his younger days.
Mr. Buchanan was born in Auckland in IS6O. and after passing through the Auckland Grammar School lie was articled to the legal firm of Whittaker and Russell. He later set up in practice on his own account as a barrister and solicitor in Wyndham Street, where he continued until his retirement in 1912. Mr. Buchanan's enthusiasm for yachting dated from his early boyhood, and at different times he was the owner of some fine yachts. Among these were the Lala and the Yvonne, both built by Robert Logan, the Ivotari and the Rainbow. Ho did not take an active part in the administration of the sport, hut was a member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for many years. He always showed a strong preference for class racing as opposed to handicap events. Mr. Buchanan acquired a very thorough knowledge of yacht designing and was known to leading designers both in England and America. Since his retirement he spent much of his time in travelling and frequently visited England, where one of his sons now is. Ho is survived by his wife, a married daughter and two sons.
