LENDING LIBRARIES
NUMBER IN AUCKLAND LARGE READING PUBLIC The considerable number of lending libraries in Auckland was commented on by Mrs. Leo Myers when addressing members of the Victoria League yesterday morning. "You must have a very large reading public in this city," she said. "I think that in proportion to your population there are more lending libraries in Auckland than in any other city in which I have lived. Every second woman has a book tucked under her arm. I pass a perambulator and nestling next to the feeding bottle is a very good for home consu rnption." Mrs. Myers added that if any more books came out from England to the Dominion the people here would realise the sudden- rise to popularity of the very lengthy novel. Books were decreasing in number, but increasing in size. "Shortly you will have to take a hand cart down to your lending library to haul your books home," she said .
