CELEBRATIONS DEFERRED DURATION OF THE WAR ' The postponement of the Auckland centennial celebrations until after thai war was decided upon at a meeting of the metropolitan executive of the Auck-' land Provincial Centennial Council last night. The step was taken owing - to' the great difficulties, arising out of the' war, in arranging celebrations worthy of the occasion. It had previously been tentatively arranged that November 2 should be set aside for a demonstration, comprise'< ing an historical pageantry procession', in the morning and a display in thai Domain in the afternoon." Provision,' also was made for the holding of a suitable gathering of early settlers and; a historical procession by miiitaryj l naval and air force units. |

It was ascertained, however, that xtji would be impossible to obtain the co-i operation of the armed services, and! sufficient athletes and performers wouldi not he available. Although it was a'nti<i cipated that the primary and secondary' schools would be favourably disposed! toward the idea of repeating theif 1 performance at the musical festival, itj was felt that no purpose could be served) by providing that feature alone. Consideration was given to the sug-s gestion that the proposed might be confined to an early settlers' reunion, but it was felt thai such an event would not by itself adequately commemorate the occasion.
