MORE WORKING HOURS

NEED DURING THE WAR WOOLLEN COMPANY'S CASE TAXATION AT 12/1 IN POUND Comment upon the increase in award wages granted by the Arbitration (omt recently was made by Mr. T. W. Lewis, chairman of the Ivaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Limited, at the annual meeting in Christchurch. "While we do not question the Court's decision," said Mr. .Lewis, "wo are ol the opinion that if cosls are to be stabilised extra production is required. Tlie position could have been met at this point by expanding the working week to,, say, a nine-hour day of live days of the week for the duration of the war at standard rates." Mr. Lew is added that lengthy hours were being worked in enemy countries and ho also referred to the example of what is at present being performed by workers engaged in all industries in Britain affected by the war.

Discussing taxation, Mr. Lewis said that, owing to the size of the company, to pay even a 2i per cent dividend to shareholders qualified it tor the highest scale of taxation, which with national and social security taxes added now reached the astounding figure of ]2s Jd in the pound. "Some of if we quite appreciate is emergency taxation, brought about to meet, as far as possible, the Government 'pay as you go' policy for the war," said Mr. Lewis. "This position, of course, is accepted with good grace, but, added as it is to the previous heavy increases, the incidence of taxation is becoming such a burden that it will have the effect of crippling companies if it continues. Under its operation enterprise will be stultified and endeavour diminished."

During the year, the chairman stated, the company had been called upon to take a full share in the production of supplies and equipment for the armed forces. These demands had precluded it from making available to general clients the extended output it had hoped for under the policy of import selection.
