NOTABLE FIGURES
MUSIC AND THE BALLET Several notable figures in the world of music and ballet were among the passengers on the Monterey, which passed through Auckland bound for San Francisco yesterday. They included the famous violinist, Mr. Yeliudi Menuhin, a distinguished Austrian conductor. Mr. A. Dorati, and members of Colonel de Basil's Russian ballet.
Mr. Menuhin, accompanied by his wife, is returning to fulfil engagements in the United States after spending nearly six months in Australia. Although he was on holiday for most of the time in Australia, he gave 11 concerts in Sydney and Melbourne.
Mr. Dorati has been acting as a guest conductor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in symphony concerts and has also conducted for the Russian Ballet during a tour of all States. After fulfilling United States engagements, he will probably return to Australia.
Members of the Russian Ballet are proceeding to the United States for a new tour which will begin at the Metropolitan Opera in Now York.
