OHINEMURI CLUB

MEETING ON SATURDAY PROSPECTS FOR POLAND CUP CLINCH PROBABLE FAVOURITE BY j\RCHEE Much interest is being manifested in Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, to bo hcjd at Paeroa on Saturday and Monday, especially as it falls only a fortnight before the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Ellerslie, and the form may be illuminating. The fields for the first day are good, and tho Maiden Handicap may have to be run "in two divisions, although only three scratchings will be necessary to reduce it to the safety number of 26. A special train will leavo Auckland for Paeroa 011 Saturday at 7 5 #.rn., and leavo on the return at event, tho Poland Cup, one mile three furlongs, has attracted a field of 1" and «f tcr llis rci ' cnt victory in tho AvonjoiVru'o Clinch is likely to be the favourito, in spilo'of his-rise from 7.1 to 8.3. Tho lariHicao is on a six pounds higher scalo than ?hn Jvondalo Cup, the top-weight Mazir l—inti eono up from S.B in that race to 0.0, th t <Clinch is not harshly treated. The hnrses'ie defeated in the Avondale Cup 110 iMiet on the following worse terms;— 101b; Vaiamito, 111b; Mintlaw, 13U>; 17'/jlb; Coronation and Day Wind, ifilb It appears as if Clinch has improved a result of his recent outing, for which had an unusually light preparation, and with 'the handy weight of 5.3 he is likely to take il lot of beating. Chances of Besiege

Onn of the most difficult ho may have to hcit is Besiege," who lias 8.1. At his last tart Besiege won the Centennial Handicap at Atar.ainata in July, carrying 7.B'A and winniuc from end to end on a holding track In °V' °' s Since then he has passed into tho'o-vnersliip of Mr. E. Montgomery and is row b<»ing trained at Opotiki by M. B. Abbott who has had charge of him for the Pist 'ix or soven> weeks. The course at Paeroa should not bo to the disadvantage of Besiege, end ho may bo expected to make hold showing. The top-weight Mazir may require a little more ncing to bring him to winning form, as he started the season burly after a long snell However, he may be near the stage where he will come on very quickly. The dual Auckland Cup winner Cheval de Volee has rot raced since June 22, and he may not be forward enough. Valamito has failed to show any form since being operated upon for respiratory trouble, but he is improving in condition each week, and has not been disgraced in his latest- outings. Ho is now in a nico position in the weights, and it is on tie cards that he may soon return to the winning list. The two races ho has had lately are likely to have been tymeficial to Jlintlaw, and ho is another who may be near to -form. He has, raced well previously at Paerca, and with his light weight may add a lot of interest to the contest. Of those below .Mintlaw, the best prospect might, be Coronation, who showed up prominently with a sharp run on the outside as the field turned for homo in the Avondale Cup. He was unable to sustain the effort, but it was very encouraging in view of the fact that he has only recently resumed racing after & long spell. Coronation should go on improving, and is a possibility. Raceline and Sunny Downs have performed creditably over middie distances, a'hd the former has solid condition to assist him. Hunting Bee would appeal more in the hack class, and there has been nothing about the latest efforts of Kilcash and Day "Wind to inspire confidence in their prospects. Ths favourites may be Clinch,t Besiege, ;Mintlaw and Valamito. Flying Handicap Field

" Some smart 'sprinters appear in the FlyJne'Handicap, and it bears an open aspect. The top-weights Llangollen and Proud Fox are very good, and they can be expected to make their presence felt, even though they are in a position where success is not easy. It may be a little early for Corato and Pirate Kin?, who have not raced just lately, and the same may apply to Lornacre and Silve'f Quex. Te Takina is a very smart beginner who displayed marked improvement toward the end of last season, and this is the sort of race she might win. Bronze Moth baa iraced well'on the course, but Orate has fen'out-oF form-and is too. uncertain- to be entrusted with ,much confidence. VTho speedy Qaymiss should bo all the fetter "for her race at Avondale, where she finished a close fourth after making the pace •in the Flying Handicap, and she is likely to return to the winning list at any time now. She should be .assisted by her early brilliance, and may take a great deal 01 beating. Valimeen showed good form in finishing third on the second day at Avondale. -and slight improvement upon that effort should make her dangerous. Maxam, who won the event last year, has shaped well in her latest races, and she may again be in the picture. Olympus failed at Avondale, but he in speedy and should not be without prospects. Dinky Di was a smart two-year-old and nas been working nicely. ■ Sure Pay is another who displayed speed as si two-vear-old last season, and he may be a possibility. Paxeno has not raced lately, and Sir Robin hag also been off the scene It is on the cards that Sir Roibn may be much improved this season. Miss Te Koura does not appeal in the class, even though she is a fast beginner, and Town Section will also require to show lmprove'ment to defeat ,this company. It is probable that there maj' be a fairly wide range of fancies, and some who may ho in demand aro Gaymiss, Valimeen, To Takina and Llangollen.
