SALE OF SPIRITS

'WHISKY AND GIN UNCERTAINTY OF SUPPLY Losses of whisky intended for Auckland and other parts of New Zealand have already caused an intensification of restrictions on the sale of spirits in the city. Import allocations were reduced by 50 per cent in the present licensing period.

Whether supplies lost can be replaced and delivered within the import period which ends on December 31 is very uncertain, but in any case deliveries would be too late to assist the best portion of the Christmas demand period, which begins early in October. A pronounced restriction in trade between merchants is reported. It is also stated that some supplies of gin intended for Auckland will not come to hand, and this spirit as well as whisky is practically unprocurable in large bottles in the hotels.

An impression is current among some importers that a little more liberality in the allocation of spirit will be accorded them in the fifth licensing period. Unless this results rationing of supplies in the trade will quickly be made more intense.
