TRAINING AT HAWERA SMART FOUR BY SEA LINK FRIESLAND SPRINTING AGAIN [by telegraph—own correspondent] HAWERA, Friday The outside of tho Hawera course proper, with the trestles out 40ft, was holding yesterday. Good- trallops were recorded by Sea Link, High Tone and Winsome Lu. ,Sea Link, who had much the worse of the weights, and Stencil were on terms at the end of four furlongs, run in 52 4-58. Sea Link should make her presence felt at Marton. Stencil is rapidly regaining her best form.

Winsome Lu began from the seven-furlong post and, picked up by Silver Gift at the five, she completed her task in 1.36, Silver Gift recording 1.9 for her five furlongs. Both are in first-rate order. War Lap defeated Viracions over six furlongs in 1.23 2-5. . ; \.4f. High Tone finished solidly to beat Retort by two lengths over three furlongs, in 39 4-ss. High Tone shapes liko an early winner. With!the assistance of Chief Lord over the first, three furlongs, in 41 3-ss. Air Flight traversed half a mile in 55 3-ss. Gitana Lass . recorded 58s. Friesland completed two rounds on the sand by sprinting . three fiirlonss in 395. It was his first gallop for several months and he has lost nono of his former dash.

Resingold and Gold Grip ran half a mile in 55 2-ss. .Val Pere went with them for two furlongs, recording 27 3-ss. Ring Chief and Battledress sprinted two furlongs in 255. Both are coming to hand nicely. Disturbed (Turn) led Min Vaals (Toki) over five hurdles. Chiltern (Grindlay) jumped four hurdles, hitting the last one hard. Rival star 11., who has returned to the tracks, is likely to race at Stratford next month and then at Trentham.

SPORTSMAN PASSES DEATH OF MR. A. ELLINGHAM [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Friday

One of the older school of racing, Mr. Alfred Ellingham, passed away this morning in the Nanier Hospital. The late Mr. Ellingham was born at Te Aute, Hawke's Bay, 75 years ago. He took a keen interest in racing at a very young age, riding winners in hurdle races and over country In his middle teens. Later, he owned, bred and trained horses, winning most of the important Jumping races in New Zealand. Denbigh was one of his first important winners, her-victories including tho Napier, Hawke's Bay and Wellington Steeplechases. From her he bred the Natator gelding. Moifaa, winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase and the Liverpool Grand National, the latter event in 1004, in the colours of the late Mr. Bpencer H. Gollan. Other successful jumpers owned by Mr. Ellingham were Chemist. Ruby and Jack Pot.
