"DEEP IN THOUGHT"

A SIGNALMAN'S FATE A verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded at Romford on Henry Frederick. A. Ward, a 23-year-old signalman employed by th© London-Midland-Scot-tish Railway. He was knocked down and killed by an approaching train while walking along the line to his signal box at Upminster. Evidence was given that Ward was taking the usual route, but was walking with his head down, carrying a respirator and helmet. When Ward realised where he was he dived in an effort to avoid the train, but just failed to clear it. The coroner, Mr. L. F. Beccle, remarked that Ward was evidently lost to the world at that particular tame, "being verv. deep in thought about something they knew nothing about.
