SALE OF PETROL

TWO MEN PROSECUTED MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINES A service station proprietor, John G. Wrightson, was charged before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.; in the Police Court yesterday, with selling 12 gallons of potrol other than under the terms of the licence. Evidence for the prosecution stated that a customer of defendant told him ho still had 28 gallons of potrol available on his licence for the month. Defendant did not verify tho statement, but supplied the petrol. Ho really had only 16 gallons left. "It was gross carelessness on the part of defendant not to check the amount of potrol remaining on his customer's licence," said the magistrate. Defendant was fined £5. "This seems to be a technical offence," said the magistrate, when Roy Arthur Hardgrave (Mr._ Holmdeii) was charged with obtaining two licences for petrol. Defendant was granted a licence for 12 gallons of petrol at the Auckland office, said tho oil fuel inspector. Ho later went to Onohunga, where he obtained a licence for 24 gallons. Counsel said defendant lived at Balmoral and had to use his car to go to ■work at Westfield. Tho 12-gallon allowance was not sufficient, and he went to the Onehunga office, where he was granted 24 gallons, stating that he had no previous licence. On gaining the better licence, said counsel, defendant immediately cancelled tlio previous one nnd posted it to tho authorities. Defendant was fined £l.
